You know what’s wrong with this picture?

Here we have a panel of eight male lawmakers gathered together to consider a bill which would ban abortions after twenty weeks of pregnancy across the United States without granting exceptions even in cases of rape, incest, or the health of the mother.

In short, just more men talking about women’s health issues that they themselves will never have to experience.

That’s what’s wrong with this picture.

by-grace-of-god:

Disappointing day when Catholic university ignores church teaching and admonition from Boston’s Cardinal Sean O’Malley and awards honourary doctorate to Enda Kelly. (x)

(images via Students for Life)

I don’t get angry very often, but this makes me livid.

I’m disgusted, actually.

I’m disgusted because Enda Kelly is not trying to legalize abortion in Ireland. He is legalizing abortion in the case of mother’s health, in order to prevent the deaths of women.

I’m disgusted because these deaths that could have been preventable, if it weren’t for Ireland’s stringent laws that place Irish doctors in jail. I’m disgusted because these laws force doctors to not treat women with complicated pregnancies because of the risked imprisonment.

I’m disgusted because the European Council told Ireland in 2009 that it is violating human rights for not providing abortions when the mother’s life is at risk. I’m disgusted that Ireland did nothing to remedy this situation—not until Savita Halappanavar’s death.

I’m disgusted because women die in Ireland because the government and the Catholic Church puts the life of a non-viable fetus on the same level—or even a higher level—than the life of a woman. Savita is not a rare case. She is not the only one. And there will be more if you don’t let Enda Kelly do his job and fix a devastating law that denies Irish women their right to life.

I’m disgusted because there’s apparently people out there who think that this is OK. That life-saving abortions are a myth, and if a woman needs one she should die with the fetus instead of being saved to continue on to live a full, complete, happy and healthy life. What about her right to life?

I’m disgusted because you who protested the college graduation and Enda Kelly and Ireland’s new law, which will only make it somewhat easier for women to have life-saving abortions, are not pro-life. You are protesting against Savita and in favor of her death. You are protesting against women’s lives.

If you think that there should not be abortions in the case of mother’s health, whether physical or mental, you do not display pro-life values. You are pro-death.

And you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Yep, keep on rationalizing…

Untrue. Here’s the most recent census of all known abortion clinics. In short, among abortion clinics in 2008. Guttmacer Institute cross-indexed racial and ethnic information from the 2000 U.S. Census with the aforementioned 2008 census of abortion clinics, and produced these results:

63% were located in neighborhoods where one-half or more of the residents were non-Hispanic white;

12% were located in neighborhoods where one-half or more of the residents were Hispanic;

9% were located in neighborhoods where one-half or more of the residents were black;

1% were located in neighborhoods where one-half or more of the residents were “non-Hispanic other”; and

15% were located in neighborhoods where no single racial or ethnic group accounted for one-half or more of residents.

Go back and check the meme. It isn’t referring to all abortion clinics, just those run by Planned Parenthood, an organization with a very racist history.

Google “planned parenthood abortion clinics in minority neighborhoods”. I got about seven pages in and there was virtually no dispute of that fact.

A racist history?? You mean Sanger?

And those sources are all pro-life sites.

Sanger and the afforementioned location issue. Sanger herself is pretty significant.

The fact that they’re pro-choice doesn’t make the fact untrue. Where is your proof that it’s wrong?

I notice in your profile that you like to use “science” to defend your point of view. Could you tell me when science has conclusively determined that a fetus becomes a human being?

Hate to break it to you, dear, but Sanger was pro-life. Hard to process, I know. Racism, yea, was a major problem of hers, as were her pro-eugenics views, but if you remember most of the founding fathers had slaves, and we practiced eugenics as public policy in the US until the 1970s.

Personhood is a philosophical belief- there is no science of the soul. Personally, I believe personhood is tied to sentience and sense, the former only occuring post-birth, and the latter in the second half of pregnancy.

“That’s [targeting of minority pregnancy] a very cynical manipulation of the reality that the abortion rate is higher in the African-American and Latino communities because their unplanned pregnancy rates are higher and the availability of modern contraception is lower.

And in the same breath of feigning concern about black women and black babies, abortion opponents are limiting access to contraception and defunding health care and child care programs, and all the other things that would be even more necessary if more of the unplanned, unwanted pregnancies were carried to term.”

I know that this is what I want to do 100%, but I still feel lost, alone, scared and broken. Is there a place on Tumblr or anywhere else, a community where I can get some support from. I don't want anyone who knows me in real life to know, but I can't do this alone.

It’s perfectly understandable and normal for you to feel this way, even when you are certain of your actions.

We here at PCG are certainly here for you. There are also a good amount of pro-choice communities here on Tumblr.

There’s For The Catholic Girls, a community primarily for Catholic people who’ve had abortions, but I’m sure the moderator would talk to you even if you’re not Catholic :). Blog description:

A pro-choice community for Catholic women who have had abortions. Speak out, share your story, or show your support.

There’s We are the 1 in 3 a community for people who’ve had abortions. Blog description:

in 3 women will have an abortion in their lifetime. Women make up 52% of the U.S. population. Yet the right to get an abortion has been under constant attack since Roe v. Wade in 1973 legalized abortion. There has been restriction after restriction limiting access to abortion and contraception in the states’ attempt to control women’s bodies and reproduction.

We believe that women should have equal access to healthcare, free from harassment and social stigma. A free choice can only be made when there are no economic, political, or social constraints. This is why we are committed to ending the stigma around abortion by creating a space for women and those close to women who have had abortions to share their stories.

The Radical Alliance for Gender Equality is a grassroots, direct action organization in Denton, TX.

There’s 40 Days For Choice, a response to 40 Days for Life.

Blog description:

An online campaign offering positive ways for pro-choice supporters to counter anti-abortion activity and clinic protests taking place during the40 Days for Life Lent campaign.

Stay tuned for daily pro-choice actions, tweets and photos. Show your pro-choice love with 40 Days of Choice

There’s Abortion Assistance, a place for people to ask for and offer rides, funds, a place to stay, someone to talk to, in all areas.

Blog description:

A collection of abortion funds, individuals willing to provide transportation and/or lodging before and after your appointment, and other resources.

This blog is intended to be a resource for people of all genders, races, sexualities, and abilities. If you are offering help, but not willing to help someone based on one of those categories, please say so. Everyone deserves to be safe and supported.

There’s also my personal blog MarPoTish. And I’m sure all the other moderators would welcome a talk with you. There are more abortion and pro choice blogs out there, you can ask the blogs I gave you for more, they’ll definitely know some good ones.

I agree that no one is blameless, and no one should put themselves above anyone, that does not mean we should not fight for what we believe in, and that is what is the cruel, heartless murder of babies. (noted: my personal belief in abortion does not stem from my faith, but rather a personal moral compass. The Word of God, however, backs up my beliefs.

This makes sense, yes. What about those who do not believe abortion is murder though? This law still applies to those who have had an abortion: even though you think it’s murder, cast a stone against her when you are sinless (for God’s judgement is the one that truly matters).

Quick correction on your Catholic post. The sisters were criticized; not the nuns. Traditionally, "nuns" refers to second-orders, or contemplative women who are usually cloistered. "Sisters" refers to third-orders, or the active women we see out and about. The Vatican seems to have no problem with nuns, or with conservative sisters like the Nashville Dominicans, but any sister in the LCWR sure gets a lot of hate these days. Support our Sisters!!

Thanks for the correction!

Some Catholic Churches are more lenient than others on certain doctrines (usually this is dependent on the general demographic of the parish).

I’m going to add to this:

This is honestly a question I’ve been asking myself for years and I look to the nuns for guidance. They were openly criticized in a very sexist way by the Vatican recently for “focus[ing] too much on ending social and economic injustice and not enough on stopping abortion, and permitted speakers at its meetings who questioned church doctrine.” I think this shows that the Vatican has the ability to wander from scripture and the message of Jesus when they are complaining that nuns are doing “too much” to help the downtrodden. Nuns have also acknowledged that the interpretations of scripture have historically been made by educated men of high standing and that those interpretations are not law and can be reread. Nuns (and monks, monks can be pretty awesome, too) are strong in their faith and they recognize that the Vatican can be wrong, the Vatican is not God, and that they have the ability to question and analyze and think deeply. I know that there are so many problems in the way that the Church is run, but I also believe that the structure of the Church can be a force for good and that nuns are a perfect example of that. As I said, this is an ongoing question for me, and I don’t think it will every be fully answered.

I'm afraid this may be a terribly stupid question, but can I just ask if you know about why some people are writing women* and her* with the asterisk? That isn't what we're all about! We care about the woman* at all stages of her* life. We care about contraception and medically accurate sex ed that will help REDUCE the number of unwanted pregnancies & abortions. We care about prenatal & post natal care. We care about women* being informed. Yet we're "bad people"? I just don't understand.

I’ve found that most I’ve interacted with focus on abortion, and that alone.
Seriously though, I’ll stop judging your opinion when you feel the need to stop thinking everyone is obligated to follow your religion. I’m not saying you need to be pro-choice. You can keep being pro-life because I don’t give a shit if you’re pro-life. I’ll stop judging you the day you think everyone needs to be pro-life and trying to outlaw a medical procedure you have no business poking your nose in unless you are getting one yourself.
